How to care for Zelkova as bonsai

Zelkova at maturity takes the form of the quintessential broom head. The single trunk divides into several large ascending branches. An easy way to develop the natural vase shape is to prune a thick trunk to the height you want and then give it a haircut twice a year, letting it quickly ramify more with each shearing. Heavy summer pruning can be too stressful. Defoliation is terrible horticulture due to the excessive unnecessary stresses to any healthy plant. Site in sun to part shade. Apply adequate water and fertilizer when young since they're extremely fast growing. The roots prefer a deep training pot.  Dark green leaves assume a bronzy fall color. The exfoliating gray brown bark becomes more attractive with age.
