Crataegus ambigua - Russian Hawthorn takes full sun and takes pruning well. Look for possible deadwood features. Easily budding back, you can use directional pruning and bud selection. Dense ramification is possible. Valued for its picturesque form, white flowers, red fruits and fall color. Red berries may persist into the winter. Hawthorn responds to water and fertilizer. The root system thrives in a cool, moist substrate high in organic matter. It may not become as vigorous in the hot south.
Most Hawthorns become broadly spreading spherical. They have a short slender trunk with thorny horizontal to ascending branches.
